Kissing upwards of 150 mph aboard the Suzuki GSX-R600 while barreling down the Auto Club Speedway straightaway, it may be hard to believe you need a literbike for hardcore speed. It may “only” be a 600, but this middleweight Gixxer packs plenty of oomph when you rev to its 16,000 rpm redline. Even better than its high-end powerband is what Suzuki engineers have eked out of the lower end, thanks to a new 8-nozzle injector, iridium spark plugs and forged aluminum pistons… okay, that may not keep you from dreaming about the GSX-R1000, but it’s certainly something to think about.

Like the Gixxer thou’, the GSX-R600 gets Suzuki’s Drive Mode Selector button which enables fuel injection mapping to be changed at the touch of a button. You may want the lower settings for rainy conditions, but you can always leave it in full “A” mode if you crave max horsepower all the time. The Gixxer 600 has gained 5-6 lbs for 2008 (due to stricter emissions requirements), but it’s more mass centralized than the outgoing model. A slipper clutch works well, though there's some feedback at the shift lever.

The GSX-R600 saddle is surprisingly soft, though it didn’t get much testing on the track; tossing the relatively small bike around the infield revealed responsive handling and, thanks to a dry weight of 363 pounds, the bike changed direction quickly and easily. An electronic steering damper aids stability and eliminates most wobbles. New four-piston Tokico brakes are remarkably effective, enabling later braking than seemed possible on certain sections of track.

When that question was put to a crowd of journalists waiting to get out on the racetrack on the new Honda CBR600 at the Barber Motorsports complex in Birmingham, Alabama last week, nearly everybody thrust their hand in the air, me included. I've owned several of these machines, from a lightly-raced 1993 F2 model to a pair of salvage-titled F4is that I re-assembled for immoral purposes. All my friends have had at least one, and the plastic-encased machines seem almost an inch shorter than before -- although 2.7mm of trail is added to keep things stable.

That's the old radiator on the bottom, giving you some idea of how compact the new bike is. The old bike was hardly a pig.

The swingarm pivot is moved upwards 5mm to heighten the effect of a fashionably longer swingarm.

A smaller chassis will need a smaller motor, right? Honda knows this, and the motor has been totally re-designed from the bottom up. The crank is a whopping two pounds lighter, and it's connected to nutless con-rods that are also lighter. The slipper-type pistons are 3.5 percent lighter too, while producing a slightly-higher compression ratio (12.2:1 from 12.0:1).

A lighter crank and lighter con-rods means lighter -- and smaller -- everything else, so the entire package -- capped off with 11-ounce lighter magnesium valve covers -- measures up as 27.5mm shorter than the 2006, all the while making more power and torque and weighing in at 3.7 pounds less.

Engine improvements don't stop there. We didn't complain about last year's clutch or transmission, but Honda improved them anyway. The clutch is lighter, smaller and stronger, and the transmission gets closer ratios and a redesign to reduce driveline lash. There's also a new gadget called the Intake Air Control Valve (IACV), which smoothes throttle response, avoiding the jerky fuel injection-induced response some other motorcycles are cursed with.

The airbox -- which now sucks air through a hole in the front of the frame like the RC-51 -- gains seven percent of additional capacity, and the radiator is 40mm narrower, but 34.2mm taller so not too much frontal area is lost. The exhaust now has titanium baffles; they could have put that bling-bling on display like some OEMs do, but they put it inside where it would do the most good.

Yamaha’s YZF-R6 has been a major player in the middleweight sportbike wars ever since it debuted in 1999. Combining light weight with razor-sharp handling and a wailing top-end punch, Yammie’s 600cc screamer has been a potent tool that perennially competes for top honors in its class.
Then in 2006, the R6 received a ground-up overhaul that resulted in a package that many judged to be the tastiest eye-candy in the segment. That (plus an optimistic 17,500-rpm tachometer) garnered plenty of attention among consumers and the media alike. This flash and controversy somewhat overshadowed a stellar chassis and the bike’s less-streetable character from its racy ergos and the engine’s top-heavy powerband.
Yamaha lured us out to Laguna Seca to sample its significantly revamped R6. What was once a great bike now handles better and has a stronger engine.
